MORE ON BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER

About Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a mental illness that affects more than 4 million people in the United States. The common condition makes it difficult for individuals to remain emotionally stable and maintain healthy relationships. People with BPD commonly experience mood swings, periods of depression and even psychotic episodes induced by anxiety. Though the causes of Borderline Personality Disorder aren’t completely known, The National Alliance on Mental Illness suggests it can be treated with psychotherapy. BPD is a serious mental health condition that should be addressed by a qualified psychiatrist in NYC immediately.

What Causes Borderline Personality Disorder?

Scientists aren’t clear on the exact causes of BPD, but they’ve attributed the disorder to a variety of possible factors. Borderline Personality Disorder is common among family members, so there are definitely some genetics at play here. BPD is also prevalent among survivors of sexual and physical abuse during developmental years. It is suspected that when individuals experience trauma, parts of the brain are altered and can be related to symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder.

Common Symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder

Individuals with BPD may experience intense mood swings and frequent irritability or a constant sense of insecurity

Someone with this disorder generally exhibits impulsive behavior and tends to have one or more of these symptoms:

  • Dissociative thoughts- feeling disconnected from your mind, body or thoughts.
  • Impulsive behaviors- reckless driving, binge eating, excess spending, substance abuse.
  • Self harm- cutting, suicidal thoughts, threats.
  • Unstable moods- anxiety, depression, loneliness, sadness.

Borderline Personality Disorder is a serious mental illness that affects males, females and adolescents. If left untreated, BPD will continue to wreak havoc on one’s daily life. It is common for those suffering from BPD to also have a concurrent disorder, such as: eating disorders, ADHD, PTSD, major depression, bipolar disorder or panic attacks.
